It’s not every one, nor every brewer that celebrates beer birthdays; but McMenamins isn’t any normal brewery.
This year’s celebration of Hammerhead’s birthday was a special day; not only because he turned 29, but McMenamins hosted a scavenger hunt for him along with Facebook contests. The grand prize of the scavenger hunt was an overnight Hammerhead package.   Unlike other scavenger hunts, the clues were not posted at the locations, and the locations weren’t posted; it all starts online. (Welcome the age of internet.)

Found the clue; had to get a selfie with it.

So up early on Hammerheads birthday, I print off the five locations to visit along with the clue at each location. Once you “find” the clue, it’s picture taking time. If your picture is correct, a server (typically the bar host) stamps your McMenamins passport with an Olympic style ring.  Proof! After all five rings, hunters were award with a surprise prize. The surprise was a Hammerhead figurine perfect for most people’s beer themed Christmas trees. Mine, he is going on vacation with me.

Which way to the next pub? Clue? Beer?

We easily found each clue at each location since both my husband and I had actually been to these McMenamins before.
Along the way, we stopped for BBQ chicken wings and birthday cake and naturally a pint (or two) of Hammerhead Ale. I closely followed Facebook and posted pictures hoping to win.
In the end, 178 people participated in the hunt, one big prize awarded. (It wasn’t us.) My husband and I both “won” a Facebook prize which was sent to us which was a $15 gift card with a picture of Hammerhead on it.
