20160904_201810Cocks are everywhere.

In the all the tourist shops, on the street. Cock there, cock here.

Now wait a minute, I’m not in Amsterdam and I know what you are thinking. I am talking the rooster in the hen house kind of Cock. You know, the barnyard variety.

We are in Porto Portugal unless your are British and you’d say O’Porto or if you are 12 and want impress everyone with your joke and cleverness. Why do the British say, O’Porto? Because I saw a Cock.

As we were wondering around the tiny hilly streets looking at every house, every shop we could (or could it be we were just flat out lost) all the tourist items have Cocks on them. Key chains, hand towels, welcome mats. You name it. We just said some Wild Ass Guesses (WAG) about why that was. “It’s because of cock fights.” or maybe “they are early risers” as my travel mates suggested.

20160904_211417As we pondered the cock symbolized, we wondered the tile laid streets and looked at tiled buildings. Never seen so much tile in my life. Must be a factory near by in 1100’s (when most of the buildings were erected with tile.) Really quite pretty I might add.

And oddly placed Eiffel Bridge. Yeap, the guy that designed the Eiffel tower 20160904_205816.jpghas a bridge here and it does look exactly like the tower; just on it’s side. A big hunk of metal next to tile house. Hard and imposing looking with the soft and pretty of the buildings.

After walking up hills in 1000 degree temperatures (or 89) I ducked into a tourist office to inquire as to why Cocks are everywhere, and are they the symbol of Porto. She assures me in broken English they are not, however they stand for Justice. Yes, Justice. I’ll sink in a minute. So the story goes that this man in a town 70 km from here was going to trial for murder, a murder in which he did not commit. He said his innocence would be proven when a cock sings outside the courthouse the morning of his trial. And a cock did sing. The man was freed.

So there you have it; Cock means Justice. Oporto.20160904_203016
